Overall objective

To build an alliance of significant independent Syrian media organisations committed to the highest standards of journalism and unimpeded freedom of speech. The programme aimed to unify and empower Syrian media, and to help emerging independent media to work together on achieving common goals.

Achieved results

  • In 2015, an alliance of Syrian media organisations was created under an Ethical Charter. In 2016, this alliance expanded from 20 signatories to 34 member organisations and 40 signatories to the Ethical Charter, promoting and defending free speech and professional journalism among its members, and organising training for its members.

  • Syrian media organisations were supported in capacity building on professional journalism through training and coaching (for in total 197 participants, 25% of the trainees were female)

  • 200 Media content monitoring reports produced

  • An increase of 10% in quality of content production, 9% more neutral reporting and 20% improvement of gender balance in items produced by partners monitored

  • Monthly reports on violations against Syrian media

  • Security training (PHS: 2 and ICT: 3), counselling (37 sessions) and assessments (30) were provided

  • Financial and managerial sustainability of 6 media partners strengthened (53 people in managerial positions trained/coached on (financial) management, M&E, reporting, (HR) procedures, incl. gender)

  • 28 People (editorial & management) received gender sensitisation formation (gender mainstreaming in media and organisations)
