Justice and Safety

Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Overall objective

To defend the safety of journalists by supporting security training, insurance and legal assistance.

Achieved results

In October of 2018, the Justice and Safety programme was launched. The main aim of this programme is to strengthen the safety of media professionals worldwide. Towards the end of 2018, the Legal Defense Fund was establised. Through this fund, media professionals and media organisations can apply for support when they are facing prosecution, imprisonment, or legal charges and are unable to afford a lawyer or trial costs. This way, they will not be forced to withdraw their defense and accept the consequences of, often false, accusations. In 2018, four media professionals and one media organisation received support through the Legal Defense Fund. To ensure that the information on media practitioners in judicial distress is vetted, shared, collected and coordinated , Free Press Unlimited is part of the international Journalists in Distress network.

In addition to the Legal Defense Fund, through the Justice and Safety programme, we aim to contribute to a safer working environment for media professionals by supporting safety and security trainings and supporting the provision of insurances. In 2018, initial steps were taken to make training and insurances available for media professionals. However, as the programme was only launched in October of 2018, more concrete results will be achieved in 2019.
